Storm names: common questions
What will the next UK storm be called?
The next storm named by the UK, Irish or Dutch weather services will be Storm Chloe. Names are used in order, and Chloe is the first unused name on the 2026/27 list.
Who names UK storms?
The Met Office names storms together with Met Éireann (Ireland) and KNMI (the Netherlands). A storm is named when it is expected to have a medium or high impact, and usually the country most affected names it.
Why are there no storm names starting with Q, U, X, Y or Z?
Those letters are skipped to follow international practice, as there are too few names starting with them.
When does the storm season start and end?
The naming season runs from 1 September to 31 August, so the list resets each autumn.
What should I do if a storm cuts my power?
Call 105 free from any phone to report it to your local network operator, check their outage map, and keep your phone charged. Our DNO lookup shows your operator’s direct number and outage map.
